Create a Summer Art Adventure The Entire Family Will Enjoy!

Summer is finally here, yay!, and that means that there are plenty of reasons to get out of the house and explore your local art scene. If you’re like me, you are always trying to find an activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family and won’t break the bank. Luckily most cities tend to host some pretty great festivals, concerts, and family fun days that can fill the bill, but I always like to mix it up a little and create some fun activities on my own. So if you are looking for some fun family art adventures to try, check out my list below!

Hmmm, now where is this one again?

Local Art Scavenger Hunt

I love a good scavenger hunt! They are a great way to explore your local community and engage in a little friendly competition with family and friends! A local art scavenger hunt is a great way to test your knowledge on public art pieces in your city, and may lead to a discover of art works that you may not have known about.

To get started, create a list of well known art pieces in your city, as well as some that may be a little off the beaten path. You can hold your scavenger hunt in a particular area/ neighborhood making most clues within walking distance or you can choose to branch out. Come up with clues for each art work and don’t be afraid to get creative! When its over, you will not only have discovered the many cool art works that your community has to offer, you will have also had created some great moments with family and friends!

Movies under the stars? Yes please!

Host a Neighborhood Film Festival

Film festivals are great ways to become exposed to movies and documentaries that may not be showing  in mainstream theaters. They are also a wonderful way to delve into your inner film fan and share films from your favorite genre, actor/ actress, or movie series with your local community.  Hosting a neighborhood film festival is a great way to share your love of cinema and engage with your neighbors.

To find the right venue, you may not have to look any further than your own backyard. Watching movies outdoors is the perfect summer activity and it isn’t very difficult to pull off. All you need is a nicely sized front or back yard, a projector, speakers, and an outdoor screen.  For help with how to diy an outdoor theater check out Google or Pinterest for some great ideas!

If hosting at home isn’t an option, see if you can partner with a local community center or community clubhouse. Often, they will even have a room that can be used as a theater so that you will not have to provide your own equipment.

Throw an Arty Party!

Summer and parties go together like iced tea and lemonade! You just shouldn’t go through the summer without hosting at least one great get together with family and friends, and an Arty Party is a great way to do it.  An Arty Party can be whatever you want it to be. Just break out the art and craft supplies, put on some good music, have your guests bring an art inspired dish, and go at it! There are so many great ideas for fun art activities that kids will love, and Pinterest is one of my favorite places to find them. Of course for the 21 and older crowd, try mixing it up by having wine/ craft beer tastings and pairings.  You can also play art inspired games like charades or pictionary, or get a little messy by having a water color balloon battle. Just put a drop of food coloring in the balloons before filling with water!

So this year make the most of your summer and get adventurous!  Try out a couple of these activities with your crew or create some of your own!
